Whew! It’s LA from Black Girls Eat checking in with you to see just how you are doing in this crazy little month of February. Is your head still spinning from Black History events? Still debating the Rihanna performance at the Super Bowl? How was Valentine’s Day? Are you gearing up for a 3 day President’s Weekend? This little month of 28 days sure is jam packed.
And guess what else got squeezed into February? Atlanta-based food wizards at Chic-Fil-A announced that they are rolling out their first ever plant-based sandwhich. If you were with me a few weeks ago, you know that the Chic-Fil-A struggle is real for a plant-based advocate. I mean come on! They offer six different kinds of chicken sandwiches!!!
So I appreciate the fact that they have decided to offer something on the menu for the plant-based community. From what I understand, they will be offering a Breaded Cauliflower Sandwich on a toasted bun with pickles.
So wait…hold on a second. I have a few more notes:
The cauliflower is breaded and dipped in milk and egg so it’s not vegan if that’s what you need.
But it is just cauliflower. No meat fillers or meat alternatives.
It is still “fast food” so please check out the sodium, fat and saturated fat details when you get to the store.
The sandwich is currently available in Denver, Colorado, Charleston, South Carolina and Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Recipe: Purple Yam Chips
In this Black History Moment, you can thank African-American Chef George Crum (born Speck) for the creation of the thin and crispy potato chip. Well some say it might have been him or his sister. lol. George was a chef at Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York. Legend says that a customer kept returning his french fries to the kitchen because he wanted them to be sliced thinner.
It seems that George got mad about it and proceeded to slice the potato as thin as possible. It was a stroke of genius that led to the Saratoga Chip. Crum later opened his own restaurant and served a bowl of chips on every table. I love the color of purple yams and these chips offer a purple punch of antioxidants vitamin c and potassium.
