Hey there!!!! Happy August! It’s your favorite plant-based advocate LA from Black Girls Eat, checking in to see how you are surviving summer. What’s on your plate? More fruits, grains and vegetables I hope. Did you see the blog post about shopping at the Farmer’s Market on the Black Girls Eat website? You can read all about it below.
Love, heartbreak and magic. Yes…that’s exactly how I would describe this summer.
Oh sure. I’m being a little dramatic but it’s true! I have fallen in love with a few recipes, I’ve been heartbroken by kitchen gadgets that don’t work and I have enjoyed the magic that is the Pacific Ocean.
For some of you reading this, summer is over. But not for me! Here in NYC, school begins after Labor Day. I also love to remind everyone that the last day of summer is September 22 so there’s that. Since I have more time to myself than I usually do, I tend to read more and write more. I have quite a collection of cookbooks and I enjoy trying new recipes that bring more plants to my plate.
When you decide to make healthier food choices, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Cookbooks are a great way to spark ideas. This is especially true if you don’t consider yourself someone who likes to cook. I don’t encourage the recipes with all of the fancy smancy ingredients but I would consider the ones that are written in a more down to earth tone. If the recipe intimidates you, then it’s more likely that you won’t even try.
The Power of the Remix
The trick to seeing foods differently is to figure out how to use them differently. Do you always add beans to a pot and heat them up? Why not throw them in a food processor and whip them up like a mashed potato? Do you always heat frozen broccoli in the microwave? How about trying them oven roasted with olive oil, garlic and lemon juice?
I get so much joy from helping you figure out how to remix your plate. Once you start thinking about what you normally do, start thinking about what you could do! Wanna go from plant-curious to plant-focused? Sign up for the easy 5 day email class and go from plant-curious to plant-focused with me.
The Random: Happy 50th Birthday Hip Hop
So many memories of the artists and the music that created the soundtrack of my life. My first job in the music industry was working for First Priority Music. I was a young girl from the Bronx traveling all the way to Brooklyn every day and I had the time of my life.
I recently had the opportunity to connect with some of my artists during an Apple Music Hip Hop celebration. It felt so great to be with them and I’m so proud of all that they have accomplished. Hip-Hop is in my DNA. It’s the reason that I move the way I move no matter where I am.
The Recipe: Easy White Bean Salad
Hands down one of the easiest salads of the summer. This is another example of how a cookbook can make you see things differently. Prior to this salad, I would have just heated the white beans up and put them on the side of something. Instead, this recipe makes them the star.
Thanks so much for being here! Let’s stay connected. Keep discovering new ways to put more plants on your plate and let’s all find new ways to eat well, live well and feel well. As a reminder, Here’s where you can find me:
