It’s your girl LA from Black Girls Eat and we are officially at Super Bowl Weekend. For fans of the game, it’s a bitter sweet weekend. On one hand, there’s the excitement of watching two teams go for the final trophy of the year. On the other hand, the Super Bowl means the end of the football season and a grueling six month wait for the new pre-season.
How to Have an Anti-Super Bowl Party
But if you don’t watch football, the Super Bowl could represent a different reality. Super Bowl Sunday might be your laundry day or your girls who brunch day. You might be the person at the party who has no idea what’s happening. That’s why the Anti-Superbowl Party is perfect for you.
Here’s the deal. Turn on the football game and keep the television on mute. Blast your favorite Spotify playlist in the background. Watching the commercials has been a fan favorite thing to do since forever. There have been some classics and from what I hear, you don’t want to miss this year’s offerings. When the commercials come on, turn the TV up and the Spotify down. Keep doing that until half-time.
Doing the Food Dance on Super Bowl Sunday
As a plant-based advocate, my heart goes out to those of you preparing to attend Super Bowl parties. If you are leaning away from animal products like chicken wings and nacho cheese…..things could get intense. When I started adding more fruits, veggies and grains to my plate, I had to figure out how to navigate events and parties like the Super Bowl.
Black Girls Eat is not about stress. It’s about doing the best you can to get more plants on your plate. Sometimes it might seem impossible. But have faith. In the past few years, I’ve seen people make some attempts to accommodate their plant-focused friends. That means that not every Super Bowl party offers up a spread of wings, nachos and chips. Your friends just might surprise you!
Just in case you need a Game Plan for Game Day, check out these suggestions:
Eat before you leave your house: Don’t even bother putting yourself in a position that will force you to eat foods that you would rather not eat.
Drink plenty of water: Yep. Stay hydrated and satiated.
Pack your own snacks: Grab a ziplock and fill it up with nuts, seeds and dried fruit. Whip up a quick smoothie with banana, oat milk and peanut butter.
Graze the table: If you absolutely must indulge. Sample what’s being offered and know that your favorite plant-focused meal is waiting for you at the home.
And What About Ri-Ri?
It doesn’t matter if you came for the food or the game. It goes without saying that all eyes are on the television at half-time and the volume is turned up to the max. Gotta see how Rihanna hits the stage without question!
The Recipe: Home Made Black Bean Salsa and Tortilla Chips
This is one of the first snacks I ever made when I started leaning into a plant-based lifestyle. There was always a can of black beans, diced tomatoes and corn in my house. So I made it often! Give this recipe a try with your favorite tortilla chips or in a wrap with brown rice. Be sure to visit the Black Girls Eat website for more Game Day yum!
The Random: The Lombardi Trophy
Okay so I have to share that I am huge fan of the game of football. My dad introduced the game to me when I was around 8 or 9 years old and that became our thing. Through the years, there have been great joys, great set backs and politics but the game always represented time I spent with my dad.
When I first started dating my husband, he would always make a date for Sunday and I would always decline. He couldn’t believe how dedicated I was to watching the games. My favorite team is the Denver Broncos. Why? Something about the colors and the horse racing across the field. Don’t ask me about this season. It’s too soon. Lol.
The Lombardi Trophy is named for Vince Lombardi who most believe is the best man to ever coach the game. The winners of the Super Bowl get a Lombardi Trophy. The trophy is worth about 10K and made by the fabulous folks at Tiffany & Co. On one of my many visits to Denver, I had the opportunity to spend some time with both of the Lombardi trophies the Broncos won in back to back Super Bowls. (1998 & 1999). See me in the photo above with a smile that didn’t go away for like two weeks!
Thanks so much for spending time with me. I’ll be thinking of you on Sunday! Find me on Instagram and Tik Tok and let me know how you did! Don’t forget to shop with me at Amazon for Valentine’s Day !!!! See you next Thursday!
