Hello there! It’s me, LA from Black Girls Eat in your inbox. Welcome to another issue of Recipes & Random-Ish. As a plant-based advocate and cheerleader for fruits, veggies and grains…it’s always good to be here. And of course, I am very pleased that you are here. Thank you for subscribing. Thank you for sharing with your friends and family.
But Why Are You Here?
Maybe you signed up on Instagram. Maybe you shared your email address after reading a post at the Black Girls Eat Website. Maybe I met you somewhere in person and you signed up. Either way, I’m glad that we are connected. I hope that these weekly newsletters give you some new ideas for adding more plants to your plate. I also hope that the newsletters help you get to know me better.
My dream is to cook, coach and consult. I love sharing what I’m learning and I appreciate every opportunity to help someone who is interested in going from plant-curious to plant-focused. When it comes to food, I like to keep it fun and engaging. No stress here. Life can be stressful, so there’s no part of Black Girls Eat that wants to bring you drama!
I’m all about the good life these days. Some of you may know this already but a few years ago, I was a very sick woman. I didn’t know what was going on with me. There was a constant pain running through my hands, legs, back and feet. I just felt achy all the time. My energy was low and I will admit…at times I was outright grouchy!
I wrote about it here for The Beet
After about a year of that craziness, I found a rheumatologist who helped me understand that there was a lot of inflammation in my body. I later discovered that inflammation is painful and at the root of a lot of illnesses. I started looking at the foods that can cause inflammation and decided to either quit cold turkey (meat) or to lean further away from it (sugar). I’m feeling much better now and I do attribute that to my plant-based choices.
So What’s That About Ice Cream?
Yass! Sunday, July 16 is National Ice Cream Day. I absolutely plan to indulge this weekend. As a matter of fact, I already have. I took a quick trip to Playa Gelato for some cold and creamy goodness just last night. They are the first ever gelato shop in the Bronx. And the menu is amazing. I don’t eat as much sugar or dairy as I did just five years ago, but from time to time….I like to make it happen.
They offer gelato in both vegan and traditional flavors as well as milkshakes and sorbets. They even have a Woof-latto for your fur baby!
